What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants refer to small titanium posts that are surgically placed in the jawbone to act as artificial tooth roots. Lifelike, functional restorations are attached to these posts once they’ve healed. They’re the only solution that can replace a missing tooth from root to crown, and they come with a wide variety of unique advantages, including improved bite force, as well as the potential to last for decades.
The 4 Step Dental Implant Process
- Initial Dental Implant Consultation – Dr. Tuka or Dr. Abdul will speak with you about your tooth loss and determine if your jawbone is healthy enough to receive dental implants.
- Dental Implant Surgery – We can place dental implants here in our office, meaning you’ll be working with the same trusted team throughout the entire process. As for the surgery, it takes around an hour to place a single dental implant, and anywhere from one to four or more can be done at once.
- Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment – After the implant surgery, the titanium posts will need three to four months to properly fuse with your jawbone (osseointegration). Once this has happened, you’ll return for a second, shorter procedure to receive your abutments, which will connect to your final restoration.
- Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – You’ll receive a crown, bridge, or denture designed to address your specific tooth loss, and it will attach to your abutments and receive full support from the underlying implant posts. From there, you’ll be ready to enjoy your new smile!
Benefits of Dental Implants
Dental implants have earned their reputation as a superior solution:
- They replace the entire structure of a lost tooth from root to crown.
- They restore a majority of a patient’s bite force, which means it’s easier to eat a healthy, nutrient-packed diet.
- Dental implants can prevent the bone resorption that occurs in the jaw following tooth loss, leading to a fuller, healthier facial structure.
- With the right care, they can last for several decades or potentially a lifetime, and they do not require any specialized cleaning products.
